Business Valuations & Advisory

How Much Does a Business Valuation Cost?

The cost of a business valuation varies depending on its purpose, complexity, and the level of reporting required. Valuations prepared for tax filings, litigation, or financing typically require more analysis and documentation than those used for internal planning, which directly impacts cost.

Typical Cost Ranges

For privately held businesses, typical ranges are:

  •  Calculation Engagements (limited scope): generally between $4,000 and $9,500 – Ideal for internal management planning, strategic benchmarking, or initial exit discussions where a full conclusion of value is not yet required by a third party.
  •  Valuation Engagements with a Conclusion of Value: commonly between $9,000 and $19,000+: The “Gold Standard” for IRS Gift & Estate Tax, Litigation, and M&A Transactions. This includes a certified Conclusion of Value and a robust report (Summary or Detailed) designed for external defense.

Gato Consulting Engagements follow the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA) Professional, Development, and Reporting Standards.

Selecting the appropriate type of valuation is often more important than the price itself. A lower-cost engagement may be appropriate for internal planning, but there are risks associated with litigation (including Divorce) and dealing with the IRS that will usually be larger than the difference between a Calculation and a Valuation Engagement. Find out more on our page dedicated to the different types of Valuation and Reports.

What Influences the Cost of a Valuation?

Rather than a “one-size-fits-all” fee, we price based on the complexity of your entity and the level of assurance required.

Factor

Impact on cost

Purpose

Internal planning (Calculation) requires less documentation than IRS or Court-ready (Valuation) engagements.

Small Businesses

Companies with revenue under $5 million apply for Small Business Discounts. (or $5M in Total Assets for Real Estate firms)

Entity Complexity

Multi-entity holdings or complex capital structures require deeper forensic analysis.

Data Readiness

Clients providing information quickly and with responsive teams qualify for information readiness discounts.

Data Quality

Companies with clean, accrual-basis financials, especially if audited, will qualify for information-quality discounts.

By reducing the time we spend on gathering and understanding information and on data reconstruction, we can focus on high-level analysis—and we pass those savings directly to you.

Final Perspective

A business valuation is not a commodity—it is a professional analysis that may be relied upon by tax authorities, courts, lenders, and business owners.

Choosing the appropriate level of rigor ensures that the valuation is both useful and defensible.

As you can see below, at Gato Consulting, we have gathered several differentiators that provide a very high level of robustness, accuracy, and defensibility for our Clients.
